What is God? Is it the personal God of the Judeo-Christian tradition? Or is God simply a metaphor for the energy that manifests all physical things? I think it depends on your culture. In Western culture, God is generally seen as a separate entity, over and above everything that is worldly. This is not generally the case in Eastern religions, where god is the energy that connects all physical things. The word God is best avoided in this case and alternative words such as Tao or Brahman used.
